„To truly heal, we have to find our younger self, the wounded child in us, and heal the child.” - Dr. Russell Kennedy
I am rewriting this for the tenth time in a row and I am still not able to put everything into words but to keep it short, in this first blog post I wanted to share with you how I finally won the eternal battle with myself and chose to heal and discover myself.
Back in 2017/18 I was miserable. I was dealing with an eating disorder, depression and anxiety at that time, which was basically all I had left. Little did I know that I had made the worst friendship with that quiet voice in my head, which got louder and louder telling me that I was doing fine while flushing my food down the sink at school - Why would someone hold on to something so toxic? Well, I obviously did not realize that my inner child was screaming for appreciation, love and acceptance. My mind and my ego ruled over my life and I literally first had to hit rock bottom (twice lol), to finally realize that I NEEDED to heal my inner child, my traumas and my dominant thought patterns to be able to break free from those voices.
As I „recovered“, my self healing journey slowly started to unfold. I began to pay more attention to my thoughts, my feelings and my actions. Well, at least I thought I was healing myself. This whole process didn’t happen over night, neither in a couple of months.. it took me 4 years - and still counting - to finally be able to UNDERSTAND what triggered my eating disorder in the first place. Looking back at it now, I realized that I still was VERY unaware and unconscious of all the things that were buried deep down in my subconscious. I basically healed myself solely on the surface, leaving all my limiting beliefs, doubts, worries, fears and dominant negative thought patterns out of sight, which subconsciously still ruled my life and manifested into my reality. After I realized that I STILL needed to heal, I made a commitment to really CHANGE and to FOCUS all my energy on myself and my journey. I committed to heal my deep rooted lack of unworthiness once and for all, to embrace myself and my body and to finally be able to step into my true potential!
In order to heal and find more peace, one of the most helpful things we need to do is committing to shadow work. Basically, this means facing all the parts of ourselves that we would rather bury under a rock and pretend that they don't exist at all. In psychology, a shadow is a concept that was coined by Carl Jung, which is a metaphor that refers both to our deepest wounds and the parts of ourselves that we suppress or deny, and which are often left unspoken and untreated.
Often, our deepest wounds lead us to believe that we are completely unlovable, undeserving people who are flawed. In most cases, these wounds are all created and nourished during our childhood and youth, but they can also develop later in life. Perhaps you were bullied or experienced a traumatic life event, which triggered your inner child and created those wounds. As long as these wounds stay untreated, they fester, causing us to live from a place of unworthiness, lack and pain.
Shadow work allows you to break free from your ego and live from a place of abundance, gratitude and love. You stop interpreting interactions through the lens of your wounded self. Remember: In life, most things are not about us, but about people who, unconsciously, act out of unhealed wounds of their own.
Growing up, I thought life was just about going to school, college, getting a job with a decent salary and maybe getting married. But god, I was SO wrong! Life isn't quite as linear or predetermined as many of us tend to believe. Each and everyone of us - no matter if you consider yourself as „spiritual“ or „religious“ - essentially IS a spiritual being, having a human experience on earth, trying to find its own purpose and life path. Our reality really is a projection of our own thought patterns, experiences, past traumas and beliefs. It's impossible to view “reality” objectively because we create it ourselves through our own unique experiences. The key is what we choose to feed our brain with. We all have much more potential within us than we often realize - it’s truly a case of mind over matter.
“You do not see the world as it is. You see it as you are.” Therefore, what you hold in mind comes to life, irrespective of your preferences. This is because life is a mirror, reflecting the image of your innermost thoughts.
We often believe that we see the world as it truly is, however, what we don't always recognize is that the way we see and interact with the world is reflective of our own innermost thoughts. As such, life can be thought of like a mirror; it reflects back to us the image of our thoughts, beliefs and feelings.
This concept may seem strange but think about it – have you ever had moments when your circumstances or surroundings perfectly aligned with how you were feeling inside? If so, it was likely no coincidence! What's more, this idea doesn't just apply to external influences; our mental and physical health are both influenced by what we focus on internally. We manifest what we put into our minds - positive thoughts will yield positive outcomes and vice versa.
As daunting as this may seem, remember that by becoming aware of these patterns in our lives we can begin to change them. Through actively practising mindfulness and awareness, we can take responsibility for how we shape our experience of the world around us. Start by understanding yourself better and learning to tune into your innermost thoughts; then find ways to modify them if they are not serving you. Doing so could be a powerful catalyst for transformation in your life.
It all comes down to remembering one simple thing: you do not see the world as it is - you see it as you are.
How I found my purpose in life: well there’s no magic magic formula, not a pill or a „How To“ video on youtube - the truth is that you have to do it on your own. You have to find what works best for you. Find your own path to become the most authentic version of yourself on this planet. Do the things that light you up from within. Don’t forget that everyone has its own purpose on earth. Go and find yours. The most important thing I’ve learned so far is that it’s normal to feel completely lost, to feel discouraged, to procrastinate even though you exactly know what needs to be done. The thing is, people tend to feel more satisfaction thinking about the things they want to accomplish, than actually achieving them. That doesn’t mean that it’s absolutely wrong to think about it - in fact it’s the first step towards it. Unfortunately only thinking about it won’t lead us automatically to it. You also have to live according to it. You’ll surely have to sacrifice things, make important decisions and get out of your own comfort zone. That’s where most people give up.
The main thing that’s stopping us from living our dream life is fear - fear of the unknown and fear of failure. With time you’ll learn that failing is a necessary part of the process itself, but I get that - I was stuck in the same mindset not that long ago. How many times have you thought about doing or changing something in your life, but the sentence in your head started with “What if..? “ See, you limit yourself with your beliefs.
As soon as you experience the real power of your own thoughts, how they actually determine your reality - only in some extent ofc - you’ll realize that you’re more in charge of your life than you eventually thought.
