UNDERSTANDING THE LAW OF DUALITY
..in order to get a better understanding of the essence of life
Human existence is dualistic.
This means we make sense of our world by comparing one thing to another. In order to “know” one thing as a human, you must first experience its other side.
“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.”
– The Kybalion
This principle basically states that everything is dual or polar and has an opposite. We can only know something by comparing it to something else. The important point here is that these “opposites” are shiftable degrees of the SAME thing, located on the same scale, placed on the same line. In human existence, what you might perceive as being opposites, are actually variations of the same thing. So in order to know one side or to get closer to one, you first must know the other. That contrast is what allows you to experience it.
Similarly, there are no good or bad experiences. Experiences are opportunities; nothing more, nothing less. What really matters is what you learn from the experience itself. The Universe always gives you what you are, what you radiate out and not what you desperately want! Rather than good or bad; right or wrong, the key is to allow that the experience reveals to you the direction you might need to follow, the things that might need some healing first, in order to reach your highest potential.
I’m sure that we all can agree on the fact that some experiences we faced that initially proved unpleasant, later on helped us to grow and evolve even further in our human existence. If I hadn’t gone through my eating disorder, I wouldn’t be here writing about human consciousness, our subconscious mind and the importance of healing. Everything you experience in your life ultimately is a result of your thoughts, feelings, choices and actions.
We often tend to think of opposites as mutually exclusive but in reality, they’re interdependent. While life has its difficult moments, those are the times that often show us the way out and towards something beautiful and fulfilling.
Take light and darkness, for example. Without the darkness, we would never appreciate the light; and without the light, we would never be able to stumble around in the dark and find a way out. The hand that finds itself in darkness and gets used to it, later can use that same darkness to guide it forward.
The duality of life teaches you to differentiate between the two sides and draw the line. Even the things that appear to be bad might be a blessing in disguise and vice versa. Life’s true beauty lies in understanding and accepting that the difficult times bring us the most valuable gifts and lessons.
Your journey through life requires you to explore and appreciate both sides of duality in order to reach balance in life. It’s about embracing both extremes, learning to recognize the good and the bad, and discovering a sense of wholeness in the journey itself!
Look at it like this:
To get something you give it away.
To take control you give up control.
To know what you want you must know what you don’t want.
To gain freedom you must discipline yourself
Yet it is when we start labeling things as right or wrong, good or bad, that duality can get problematic. The real challenge is to stay centered within the duality, finding a balance that will keep the harmonious peace of our inner world in sync with the oftentimes hectic environment that is outside of ourselves.
A wise person once said, “it’s not about operating at either extreme. It’s about remaining at your center even when the hurricane of life is swirling around you”. This is what duality teaches you - that even in chaos there can be peace.
The law of duality has taught me an important lesson: the balance between opposites can provide a beautiful harmony in life. Whether we are talking about yin and yang, dark and light, or happiness and sadness, when each of these opposites interact together, you can create something greater than either of them individually.
Life is indeed a coin with two sides. Much like the head and the tails, these two sides represent both light and dark, positive and negative, good and bad. To see and experience the wholeness of life, you must learn to embrace both sides, understanding that they can often co-exist without struggle.
This actually can be likened to the concept of duality in consciousness, in which you acknowledge that seemingly opposing perspectives, emotions, and opinions, can often form part of a greater oneness, a whole of understanding. It’s much like how the motion of a wave is connected to and unified with the entire ocean - as such, we’re all part of a bigger reality and perspective, though we might look and feel separate.
This has been a major turning point for me personally. Instead of trying to pick sides and see one as right or wrong, I’ve realized that you can take the lessons of each and balance them together. And while life may often present conflict between the opposites, I finally understand the importance of staying at the center even during chaotic times.
View duality as a chance to expand your own understanding and to open up your mind, to find ways to accept the spectrum of your experience and while being on your personal journey make use of both sides, to ultimately reach a sense of peace and oneness.
